It’s common at our house that when one of us gets a bit irritated the rest of us get snippy just for company. So, I’ve been reading alot lately on stress. What causes it and how it can affect not only ourselves but those around us.
Interesting facts surround the classroom (which translates into my homeschool – I’ve got enough kids to qualify as a classroom LOL!) where the teachers is stressed out. Studies have shown that the students in the stressed teacher’s classroom have higher “stress hormone” cortisol levels each morning. This makes us think that stress just might be contagious. However, teachers that were given support and resources to identify stress in their lives and tips to combat it were able to counteract the effect stress had on their classroom and the students.
Sadly, stress often comes from our perception of things. We can put alot of stress on ourselves. It’s typical for moms to feel that they have to “be” or “do” something in a specific way.
Our homes/classrooms are no different. When mom is stressed out it is definitely contagious and affects the entire family. Everyone starts getting a bit snippy and snarky. But, put that stress in it’s place and take intentional steps to keep a calm and disciplined day and the whole atmosphere changes. One of my favorites is to play good quality Christian music or calming classical music. It’s an automatic attitude changer. Yet, it’s hard when you’re in the situation, but the Bible is clear when it speaks about “cares.”
I Peter 5:7 Casting all your cares upon him, for he careth for you.
Phillipians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
When you begin to feel the muscles tighten and you find it hard to breathe – take a minute… Go lock yourself in the bathroom if you need to!
Psalm 37:7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him:
