I think we all struggle with this. We get caught up in the mundane, the day to day… work, school, eat, sleep – repeat. We forget that we are molding and shaping – influencing the next generation with each word, each action.
Encouragement – affirmation – praise are fundamental needs in our children’s lives. We can affect our children greatly with our simple responses to them. I know fundamentally – most parents believe that their children are “special.” I’ve mentioned before how as a principal I used to hear often of how special each parent’s child was. And, how they felt they were quite advanced for their age. Even if the child is a happy, healthy child of AVERAGE intellect… the fact that the parent felt that their child was special was huge to me. It’s exactly how it should be… our children should hold the amazing “special” place in our hearts. But, not just in our hearts- – let’s put feet to that. Make it clear to them in how we intentionally act to ENCOURAGE them.
Let’s not be the parent that is too busy to notice how amazing our child is. I know we get wrapped up in what their homeschooling assignments are today, if they’ve even finished their online writing class this week, or if they cleaned their room. It’s easy to focus on deadlines and tasks. Let’s be the parent that looks for opportunities to give affirmation of a job well done – or an awesome attitude about a bad situation – or the thankful heart that they expressed to you after you did something for them.
Life goes by way too fast, in a blink of an eye they’ll be grown and you’ll be wondering where it all went. Make a point to give your child that priceless gift, encouraging them in all the meaningful good ways a parent can! Let’s be THAT parent!
